Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)

The Bristlenose Pleco is Australia's favourite algae eater — and one of the most practical and popular fish in the freshwater hobby. Compact, hardy, and incredibly effective at keeping glass and surfaces free of algae, it is the perfect addition to almost any community aquarium. Males develop distinctive bushy bristles on their snout as they mature, giving them a wonderfully quirky appearance.

• Adult size: Up to 15 cm
• Temperament: Peaceful; may be territorial with other plecos
• Tank size: Minimum 100 L
• Diet: Herbivore — algae, sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, driftwood to rasp
• Temperature: 20–28°C
• pH: 6.0–7.5

Unlike larger plecos, Bristlenose stay a manageable size and are safe with plants — making them the ideal algae-control fish for planted tanks. Include driftwood in the tank for them to rasp on and hide under.
